Artist's Statement

Madi at workMy artistic journey is ever evolving and growing. I studied fine arts in college and was particularly interested in the interplay of color and texture in my work. As a high school art educator and arts administrator in the New York City public schools, I taught and supervised painting, drawing and a myriad of arts subjects from video production, crafts, and fashion design to quilting. I wound up falling in love with many of the art subjects that I taught. Eventually, quilting emerged as the one that I chose to pursue seriously, and I have never looked back. Through quilting I have made lifelong friends; I have been challenged by the endless options presented by this medium; and I find that my work changes and goes in new directions with each new piece that I create. Making quilts has given me the ability to touch people’s lives in a unique way that brings joy, warmth and comfort to them.

As an avid quilter for over 30 years, I have embraced the multifaceted world of quilting. I have read countless books on traditional quilting and its rich history. I have valued the quilt groups to which I have belonged through the years. Many happy hours have been spent sharing ideas, supporting each other’s goals and dreams, and engaging in group projects, workshops, exhibitions and community outreach.

My current quilt works have taken a new direction. I based my first quilts on interpreting traditional patterns. I now employ a free-form technique that gives me the ability to create landscapes and abstracts that are highly textural and intense in color. I also create wall quilts that focus on design elements using geometric forms. In all my works, color and texture and a sense of whimsy are present. I love spending hours in my studio getting lost in the creative process. I have shown my work in galleries and museums and have written two books on quilt-related subjects. I also enjoy presenting workshops on a variety of quilting techniques. My husband Steve and I have three wonderful sons and currently reside in a Victorian house in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, New York.
